Modeweek

Een modeweek (Engels: fashion week) is een evenement over meerdere dagen waarbij modeontwerpers en -huizen met catwalk-presentaties (Engels: runway shows) hun nieuwste collecties tonen aan inkopers en journalisten. Modeweken vinden meestal halfjaarlijks plaats, een keer voor het lente/zomerseizoen en een keer voor het herfst/winterseizoen.

Modeweken zijn een belangrijke graadmeter van wat het komende seizoen wel of niet in de mode is. De vier invloedrijkste modeweken zijn die van Londen, Milaan, New York en Parijs. De modeweek van New York is de eerste van het seizoen, gevolgd door Londen, dan Milaan, en Parijs als afsluiter. Naast deze grote vier modeweken worden er wereldwijd tal van modeweken gehouden om de plaatselijke mode-industrie te presenteren.

Sommige modeweken richten zich op specifieke kleding, zoals Miami Fashion Week in Miami en Rio Summer in Rio de Janeiro, beide voor zwemkleding. Er zijn ook modeweken die zich specifiek op bruidskleding of confectie richten.

De eerste Fashion Week was die van New York. Het evenement begon in 1943 onder de naam Press Week, met de bedoeling de Amerikaanse mode-industrie meer onafhankelijk te maken van de modehuizen in Parijs.

Fashion refers to a distinctive and often habitual trend in the style in which a person dresses or to prevailing styles in behaviour. Fashion also refers to the newest creations of textile designers. The more technical term costume has become so linked to the term "fashion" that the use of the former has been relegated to special senses like fancy dress or masquerade wear, while "fashion" means clothing more generally, including the study of it. Although aspects of fashion can be feminine or masculine, some trends are androgynous.

Mindervalide mannequins stellen 'perfectie' aan de kaak

Op een populaire winkelstraat in Zürich werden voorbijgangers geconfronteerd met mindervalide mannequins. Het project, getiteld 'Because Who Is Perfect? Get Closer', stond in teken van de internationale dag van mensen met een beperking (3 december).

Het is een iniatief van Pro Infirmis, een organisatie voor mensen met een handicap, om de zichtbaarheid van lichamen die afwijken van de idealen in de modewereld te vergroten en meteen ook de vastgeroeste "perfectie" aan te kaarten. De afgeborstelde lichamen van paspoppen stemmen namelijk maar overeen met een heel klein percentage van de bevolking. Voor mensen met een fysieke beperking is het al helemaal ondenkbaar om mannequins in het straatbeeld te zien die herkenbaar zijn.
